Antiquing Models and Miniatures

Antiquing a method of making an object appear antique through distressing or the application of paint.

In our case the object in question is a figure or model,  antiquing can be applied to any scale but is usually found on larger scale models 40mm plus.  There are several methods that can be used to give an antique effect depending on the desired end result.  I mainly use these to give a pewter effect to large scale figures such as fine art castings 80mm doctor who figures.

This cyberman was given a pewter effect finish by first cleaning the figure then he was gently buffed up with brass wire being careful to just put a shine on the highpoints but not damage the surface area of the figure, or if your a bit wary of using wire a fine grade of wet&dry sandpaper would do the job.

Next  several washes of black with a little flesh mixed in were applied,  being careful to apply very thinly at first and gradually increase the amount of black and concentrate on picking out the details.

When the figures detailed enough a light buffing with a lint free cloth or a dremmel polishing attachment by hand being careful to just put a slight shine on the highpoints.

How far to go with highlights and shading are a matter of personal taste, if it looks right to you then it is right.

An alternative method is after cleaning the figure to use boot polish to get the antique look,  the draconian to the right was done with boot polish.

Apply the polish carefully with an old rag then buff the excess polish off,  it's a bit messy but quite easy to do.

For different metals say for statues in wargames or a bronze effect on a large scale figure for display undercoat black and gradually dry-brush slowly building up the highlights until satisfied with the effect.

A good trick for doing this sort of thing is to use washes and glazes to increase the depth or modify the colour of the model.

For example if doing a bronze statue using green washes to get a weathered and aged look.

Kevin Dallimore has an excellent example of this done with layers on his site
